Friends of Ulumay is an organization of people who are passionate about preserving and enhancing the natural resources of the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary. Some members participate in outdoor recreational activities such as kayaking, hiking and mountain biking at Ulumay. Many members support restoring the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary to a more natural state, including the removal of Brazilian pepper trees (Schinus terebinthifolius) - an invasive non-indigenous plant.

The Merritt Island/Beaches Parks Operations office is located at this 18.38-acre community river park. Situated in a wildlife sanctuary, the park caters to both active and passive recreational enthusiasts. The boat ramp and a natural launch area provide access for boaters, rowers and paddlers into Sykes Creek leading to the Barge Canal or Banana River. Fishing is popular from the shoreline and fishing dock. An exercise trail, softball fields, basketball, tennis and racquetball courts invite fitness and active play.
