Commemorating...
Brevard County's Civil Rights Heritage

The 11.93-acre Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park features the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Center. The Moores were parents, educators, and leading local and national civil rights activists. After organizing the first Brevard County Branch of the NAACP, they remained instrumental in the NAACP and the fight for equality and justice until their untimely deaths. On Christmas night 1951, they were murdered for their involvement in the civil rights movement when a bomb exploded under their home. The park is dedicated to the celebration of their lives and to promoting awareness of their unique contributions to the early civil rights movement.

The Cultural Center

Opened on April 9, 2004, the 5,000 sq ft Cultural Center is located on the property of the original Moore family home site and is universally accessible. Dedicated to preserving African American history, it is a repository of Moore family artifacts, historical documents, and currently features a timeline of strategic events of the pre-civil rights era beginning with slavery. Donations or loans of memorabilia and artifacts for future museum exhibits are welcomed.

Programs and Conference Center

Serving to stimulate appreciation of African American culture and heritage, programs include visual, literary and performing arts, as well as on-site and outreach exhibitions. In addition to offering lectures, drama, dance, reading, and creative writing, the center is a meeting place for community organizations. The 100-seat conference center has surround sound with a backlit screen that supports VHS, DVD, and computer. The library offers visitor access to reference materials relating to people of African descent. Landscaped with indigenous trees and foliage and well shaded by large oaks, the 11.93-acre park is ideal for concerts, games, and other outdoor activities.

Development

Park development was funded through the State of Florida, the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, and the North Brevard Parks Referendum. The nonprofit corporation, Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex, Inc., is pursuing funding for future development that includes construction of a replica of the destroyed Moore home; a pavilion with stage, full kitchen and restrooms; a heritage walking trail; meditation garden with reflective pool; and a mausoleum with relocated graves.
